That isn't quite right. Many of the locals leave for a week or two toward the end of August. They head to the coast as the city is quite hot during that time period. Many shops and restaurants cut back on staff or if very small will shut down for a week. However the city is still full of tourists and all the people that cater to them...and that includes the shops and restaurants. Very few of the restaurants will be shut down, and you will barely notice the city being a little less full.
I wouldn't worry if I were you, tourist have been going to Rome during that time period for decades and having a great time. BTW they are not the only city that does this, New York City and Paris do it as well as many others.

It's true that most Europeans head for the beach in August (especially during the week of Aug. 15, known as Ferragosto in Italy) to escape the ungodly heat of most European cities, Rome included. However, it's not quite like it was decades ago where the cities closed down. They are getting wise to the benefits of tourism and you may actually find that Rome is a pleasant (if hot) place to be with fewer tourists to be waiting in line with to get into the prime attractions.
Of course, if there is something you are dying to do or see, be sure to check that it is not going to be closed during the time you are there. It would be a shame if you missed out.

I think August is the worst time to go to Rome ... but then many feel the opposite, so there should be lots of places open for business. There are also street markets, you might be able to get some great things at those.

Jen - I envy you!! (Although we are going to Spain)
Rome is just beautiful. We went on a cruise and spent
time in Rome and I must say it was busy!
There were no shortage of places to shop and dine
and we said that one day we would book a holiday
there. You will have a wonderful time!!

Dont worry you will find lots of places open as well as restaurants and bars....in Italy hardly the food is a problem and the restaurants close very late....maybe they was referring to the day of 15 august which can be slightly difficolt to find shops open...but is a thing of the past.....nowadays not all people can afford to stay close just one day even....

i was there in 2002 in the first 2 weeks of august and despite being told that the whole place is on holiday didn't really notice any difference. As far as I can remember we didn't have any problems with finding things to do

I went in August and it was only some small shops that closed, and generally not in the main streets and plazas.
All the restaurants but one we came across were open, as were all the attractions, don;t worry :) Enjoy your trip!

as for the extent rome shuts, i visited in august & it was lovely, the ocassional place shut. but it didnt ruin it. all the sights were open. do not fear finding somwhere to eat. trust me eating out is their life

Italians and Romans in August fill flights to all places and flights in August this expenses more beneficial, someone reported that Rome continues to be in August! is real, places of artwork closed and little site visitors, sparkling air, many festivities contained in the sq. and relaxing certain. in my opinion is the astounding month to visit Rome and at different cases will be very demanding.
