I read in the paper yesterday that some people think smoking should be also banned outside. How many of you agree or disagree and why?

I am a smoker and agree with both sides here. I do have the Right to do what I want. If I want to smoke then I shall do so. I agree others have a right to not be invaded by my smoke. That too is okay and a balance must be fair.

The real issue here is personal freedom to do what is Legal. I am tired of everyone that has a cause that we shouldn't do this and we shouldn't do that. I am a smoker so I am on the Target list of the anti-smoke Nazis. They and the rest of the "cause" of the day crowd feel I don't have the right to smoke, or have a gas blower or eat trans fats or anything that may offend them.

I can compromise on smoking around people that don't like it. That really isn't that big a deal. That is until they try to take all of my space and want to dictate how I live my life. If people keep giving in where will it stop?

Ummmm... Ok. So we can't smoke inside... And we can't smoke outside..... Why not just ban smoking and make the patch readily available to the general public? That would make all the sense in the world. Unfortunately the smoking companys control too much money and political function to ever let that happen...

Take care of gas prices before you pick on us lowly smokers... That's what I have to say... The price of gas is almost justifying my habit... I could buy a pack of smokes or a gallon of gas.... Hmmmmm.... Cancer or deplete the ozone layer.... It's a tough choice, same price.

I disagree. It is stupid how if a few people don't like what someone else is doing then they ban it. So they want to ban smoking, but not abortion (aka murder). Whats wrong with that picture. I don't even smoke and I feel this is wrong. Also like said earlier. You run the same risk walking past a started car. Should we ban cars then? No.

I think the bans are out of control and have gone too far. I believe someone should have the right not to breath in my smoke but to ban it everywhere in violating my rights, it may not be a great right but it is my right. I think smokers need to ban together get a high priced attorney and fight some of these bans, not all just some.

I have no quibble with someone else's right to smoke, even though I know it is harmful to them. But I also know their second hand smoke is harmful, and I believe that they should stop evading this issue and rally for non-combustable cigarettes. They exist. Nicotine is just an addiction... why should it matter what the mode of delivery is? Let them take nicotine pills.

But the real problem is convincing so many smokers that it is just a drug addiction that can be services lots of ways other than making stinky smoke and littering the ground with butts.

As for the first person who answered: how amusing. Last time I checked the government does tell people what kind of sex they can enjoy... they do so by making gays second class citizens. How about a little consistancy in your logic?

I wonder once you start restricting people where will it stop? It's only a matter of time before restrictions are placed on something you do. Supposedly this is a free country, lets keep it free. Suppose we ban emissions from fireplaces. How about banning smoke from barbecues, shown to contain carcinogens similar to tobacco smoke? Lets arrest people who pass gas in public. I find that much more repulsive than smelling someones cigar or pipe tobacco!

As a smoker I both agree and disagree with this idea.

Since I'm too much of a whimp to stop this deadly habit I like the idea of having my options restricted to at least make smoking more difficult.

As a believer in individual liberty I hate the big brother encroachment on my personal choice.

I disagree. Whatever happened to freedom? If we allow this, next, the government will be telling you what you can and cannot eat. Wait, they already are doing that in NYC. And after that, somebody will start whining about something else and before you know it, we have a communist society where the government controls EVERY aspect of your life. If you do not want to be around smokers, stay away from them. I don't smoke but I believe it is a persons right to do so just like it is your right not to patronize a business establishment that allows it. Wake up before it's too late and whiners, shut up, you are destroying our way of life.

by having a smoking ban for the outdoors, it would only be in highly public areas.... for example, outside grocery stores and malls

I am a smoker and i agree with the bans....
I do not smoke around those who dont, nor do i smoke in areas where there are children or elderly people

I dont think others should have to pay because I want a cigarette.... its not fair to them.... and when I quit smoking, I wouldnt want someone else blowing their smoke in my face
