There are two kinds of parachuting. There is HALO which stands for "High Altitude Low Opening" and static line parachuting which means you jump at a relatively low altitude of around 1,000 feet and you "hook up" your static line to a steel cable inside of the aircraft before you "jump" out the door and when the static line is at its limit this line (typically a yellow synthetic webbing like a seat belt that is folded over on itself and sewn tight like a rope) pulls the parachute out of the "pack" and then snaps off when the weight of you body yanks hard enough on the deployed parachute and breaks the chute away from the static line that was tied to the end of the chute with two cotton strings designed to break at around 200 pounds.
The Airborne Infantry, like the guys in the 82nd Airborne, jump these static line parachutes.

The commands are: Stand Up!!!
Hook Up!!!
Check Equipment!!!
Sound Off For Equipment Check!!!
Stand In The Door!!!
"GO!!!"

Oooorah!!!! Knees to the breeze!!!

The hook is used to hook up to the line and as the jumper goes out the door of the aircraft it automatically pulls out the parachute. The military uses this as it is fast to deploy and less chance of improper chute deployment.

It is not used for normal skydiving.
