I have replaced the sender/pump in the fuel tank. When the power plug is unplugged and the ignition on, the gauge goes to the full tank position. So I think the gauge is ok. But with both my old and new sender/pump in the tank, the gauge is all over the place. Sometimes 3/4 full, sometimes empty etc. any ideas ??

float not properly set or could be a bad ground to the sending unit. check the ground first.

well you got me on that one?????if you have replaced sender/pump....(i guess for a good or new one).the only other thing is the gauge in the dash....as the sender in tank is new....check for a good earth....as if yours keeps breaking down will cause problems.....clean all contacts and make sure they are on properly.....
