after trying to get things taken off, would there be legal recourse?

Yes, you can sue them. If you want money from them, you have to prove damages. What did their errors cost you in terms of lost dollars? If none, you would have to pay an attorney to file suit. That could cost you thousands.

If the 3 credit bureaus are reporting an accurate debt history about you, the only person you might be able to sue is YOU!

If they have innaccurate data, you would have to show specific damage caused by that data, which would probably be close to impossible. Sorry!

the problem is a suit like you are talking about will cost thousand of dollars to file

You can bring suit against anything or anybody. It's up to the court whether to accept or reject it for consideration.
