The peacock for NBC had to do with colour TV coming out way back in 1956.

Yes, they COULD, but to make it work, the logo designers would have to think of a way in which it applied or could be made to apply to the CBC network. The feathers in the peacock's tail represent the original stations in the NBC network.

NBC originally began using the peacock logo in 1956 and was initially used only for programs that were in color. There weren't many at that time.

It was used solely to denote color because peacocks, are of course, colorful. I don't see a problem with this and in fact think it was very innovative. Why should the fact that peacocks aren't native to the U.S. stop NBC using one for their logo?
