Triangle Labeling

let

angle A = 30°

Angle B = 60°

Angle C = 90°

view opposite from the cortex of angle A , 30° is little " a " or the opposite side

view the opposite from the cortex angle B. 60° is little "b " or the adjacent side

view from the opposite angle C, 90° is little " c " or the hypotenuse.

Angle C is called the right angle.

Triangle Functions

sinθ = opposide / hypotenuse = a / c

cosθ = adjacent / hypotenuse = b / c

tanθ = opposite / adjacent = a / b

The hypotenuse is the longest side. It's labeled as C

When we say "opposite" and "adjacent" we mean a side Opposite or Next to an angle.

Let's say in my little triangle, the andgle where sides B and C meet is called angle 1 okay? The side Opposite angle one is Side A. The side Adjacent to angle 1 is Side B.

The opposite side is the side that is opposite the angle (you should've learned opposite sides/angles in geometry..) and the side adjacent to the angle is the side that includes the angle, if you know what I mean. Since sides B and C INCLUDE, or make, the angle 1, A and C are the adjacent angles.

In SOHCAHTOA, the angle that's adjacent is always either A or B, because the Hypotenuse is always just called the hypotenuse.

Now, what is SOHCAHTOA? This is basic right triangle trig.

It's a nmemonic(sp?) device used to remember what to do to find an angle.

So refer back to my triangle.
&& let's say you knew that Side C=5 and Side A is 4.
And you want to know what angle 1 is in degrees.
Well, here's what you do.
C is the hypotenuse. A is the Opposite side. So in SOHCAHTOA, which part has an O AND an H? SOH.

SOH means Sine=Opposite/Hypotenuse
so Sine 1 (the 1 is for angle 1) = 4/5
Put that into a calculator.

SOHCAHTOA can help you find the degrees of an angle or the length of a side.

Here's this.

A way of remembering how to compute the sine, cosine, and tangent of an angle.

SOH stands for Sine equals Opposite over Hypotenuse.

CAH stands for Cosine equals Adjacent over Hypotenuse.

TOA stands for Tangent equals Opposite over Adjacent.

Hope this helps you a bit. If you need more help, IM me or something. [[:

In triangle ABC, angle C is a right angle. The side opposite C is named c and is called the hypotenuse.

a is opposite A and b is opposite B.

If you want the sine of A, then it is the ratio of the Leg opposite angle A to the hypotenuse. The leg opposite A is a and the hypotenuse is c, so the sin ratio for A is a/c.

If you want the sine of B, then it is b/c.

The cosine of an angle is the ratio of the adjacent leg to the hypotenuse. The cosine of A is b/c. The cosine of B is a/c.

The tangent of an acute angle is the ratio of the opposite leg to the adjacent leg. The tangent of A is a/b and the tangent of B is b/a.

The first link summarizes all of this and includes an explanation of SOH CAH TOA which is a tool for remembering your trig ratios.

First of all, you're going to have an angle, theta (which we'll call t for short).

The side which angle t projects on is the opposite (because it lies opposite to the given angle). The remaining side is the adjacent.

To answer your question, the opposite and adjacent rely on the angle. They aren't always the same for every right triangle.
