Joe Montana

2007-05-20 11:10:37 · answer #1 · answered by Sean 7 · 1 0

Saying Joe Montana was the best QB ever is a quick and easy answer , but it may not be accurate. Joe Montana played in a era when it was easier to pass the ball. Prior to 1974 when the NFL changed the rules, a defensive back could hit a receiver at any time anywhere on the field. So prior to 1974 a QB could have a receiver come open for an instant only to have that receiver leveled by a defensive back. As you can imagine this made the passing game a whole lot different back then, and a whole lot more difficult for the QB.

All that having been said I would have to vote for Johnny Unitas as the best QB ever, he played in the time when passing was more difficult and still got the job done.

Toss up between Joe Montana and Otto Graham. Montana - 4 rings, great clutch QB. Graham - best winning percentage of all time (85%). Between the NFL and AAFC went to 10 title games in 10 years, winning 6 championships.

the top 5 in order
1-Joe Montana- 4 rings. holds post-season records for most career touchdown passes (45), and passing yards (5,772)

2-Dan Marino- just look at his stats. most touchdowns (420) and yards (61361). would be first but never won a Superbowl

3-Peyton Manning- might not be there yet but will be by the time he retires.

4-Brett Favre- very consistent plays at a high level throughout his career and is nearing in on some of Marino's records

5-John Elway- great player and led many 4th quarter comebacks. winning the Superbowl in his last couple years put him on the list.

Honorable Mentions- Terry Bradshaw and Johnny Unitas.
