I've read Wikipedia's description but still can't understand this organization. Are they a group of independent journalists or a group of specific newpapers? Who edits their articles? Who is behind this group? They are very influential to say the least, yet completely mysterious. At least you know where to find the New York Times and who runs it.

The Associated Press is something of a collective. In other words, the various news-gathering organizations chip in to fund it. Your local newspaper subscribes to the service, paying a fee. The AP then sends it stories, which the paper can pick up. Radio and television stations also subscribe to the service, and there is an Associated Press Radio that provides coverage for broadcasters.

Once United Press International went under, AP has had the field more or less to itself. It's influential in the sense that everyone uses it, but I can't think of a story that caused a great deal of controversy. There are a lot of first-rate reporters that work there, though.
