Preferably without having to buy another piece of equipment. Cushions don't work.

I use a thin piece of plywood. I nailed thin pieces of moulding round the edge to prevent it from sliding, but thats not necessary. I use 1/4 inch because it's light.

I have found that one of the best ways to keep a laptop from heating up is to never turn it on. This also solves the problems of battery life, spam, viruses, spyware, and just about anything else that can go wrong with a computer!

Seriously though, if your laptop is overheating, there may or may not be anything you can do about it. If your model has the fan(s) on the bottom, then it really isn't intended to be used on your lap anyways. If it was, then the bottom would be totally sealed and the fan would be on the side or rear.

Of course you can check to make sure that the fan(s) are running and that the intake vent(s) are not plugged with dirt, lint, etc.

Yeah, thats going to be a problem. The bad thing about cushions is that can actually make the notebook run hotter because they block the cooling vents. The best thing to use is a flat hard surface, but this takes the use out of a notebook.

I'm assuming that your laptop runs extremely hot and that you place it on your lap.

There really is no way other than underclocking your processor, which I do not recommend - it slows down your computer and you also risk causing it to crash.

The only way would be to purchase a nice cooling solution that has fans on it. Check out this link from Nextag to browse some Laptop Cooling pads. I hope that helps: http://www.nextag.com/laptop-cooling-pad/search-html

They're not called laptops anymore. They're called NOTEBOOKS!!!! You can buy any one of a hundred "laptop" desks that will fold up small enough to fit your case, it also gives you some small area to mouse on too! Some have USB coolers in them, but they EAT batteries
