Because Windows has so much of the market share. It doesn't make much sense to attack an Operating System that has less then 10% of the users. The virus writers are looking for fame and to do that you have to hit where it counts.
Now, that's not to say there aren't Mac viruses, because there are. However, they only number in the dozens and don't have the user base to spread like wildfire like in the Windows world.

Macs CAN get viruses. IThere is not a technical reason why macs dont get as many viruses writen, it is a SOCIAL reason. The reason why there are not as many is because everybody wants to be the one who "took down microsoft" and noone wants to be the "JERK that took down apple". Sort of a David and goliath issue. Same with Firefox and IE. Another reason is that if youre goal is to cause disruption, why disrupt the group that is LESS than a fifth the size

Mac's can get viruses, but it is much more common to get viruses on a windows computer. This is because many more people uses windows computers so hackers made viruses for windows computers not macs or linux computes

I would expect that one of the reason is because 98% of people use Windows, and hackers creating viruses want it to spread as much as possible. Macs wouldn't have the same success, also because its programs are much less used than windows-formatted ones. I have a mac and it is (knock on wood) truly harder to catch a virus. Hope it helps.
