This is not illegal in my state. You can record anyone who calls you, but you cannot record a call you have initiated. Obviously, this varies some from state to state. As for the government part of your question--they do need a warrant. The Court finally set the administration straight on that. Unfortunately, you can't make them tell the truth to get it and the Court is secret.

To tap someone's phone a crime has to be committed. When someone is committing a serious crime against you it's possible to record and use the recording as long as the person is aware of the conversation being recorded. That piece has to be on the tape.

The government "puzzle palace" doesn't randomly select individuals to listen in on. They are stopping serious crimes, and have to have a court order to perform this. Anyone who argues this point is simply paranoid.

The police have to get their own warrant for each stint they monitor.

THe government cna make any thing leagal but, You can record someone who is harrassing you here in Tennessee.

because the government can do whatever they want to..and its not illegal to record someone as long as they know they are being recorded

It is LEGAL to record a conversation as long as 1(one) of the parties know they are being recorded!

The government CANNOT unless it gets a court order. If you can get a court order, you can too.
