We have a 3ft tank which is set up for cold water fish but eventually would like to add a heater and go into tropical fish. and we were wondering if there are any cold water fish that will survive the warmer water.
ALSO......
What size heater would be needed?
What plants would be best for a tropical tank?
Can anyone recommend a good book or website that will help a novice?

Usually you want to have 5 watts of heater power per gallon of your tank, so a 150 watt heater would suit your needs. As for plants, to get into a heavily planted tank and all those requirements is certainly beyond an answers post, entire books have been written on the subject, but for a few that should do well in a basic setup I can recommend Java Moss and Java Fern. Some microswords also will do well. Those are sold in pots at the aquarium store and look much like grass. Here's a page of links to some god info about planted tanks.

As for what coldwater fish will do well in a heated tank, most actually. Many of the fish we associate with a coldwater tank can and do live well in the mid to upper 70's which is the typical temperatures for a tropical tank. Goldfish, White Clouds, guppies, all are often selected for coldwater by will also do fine at tropical temperatures.

Here's a few suggestions for books:

Of course, these books should also be available from other sources like your local book store even if by special order.

Hope that helps

This web site has lots of information on tropical fish
http://www.tropicalfishcentre.co.uk
I think you really need to decide on either cold water or tropical or get 2 tanks because the different types of fish will not do well together.

ok well firstly take this into consideration- cold water are very easy to keep and dont cost much but on the other hand tropical fish are harder to keep, they look better but you have to buy more things. i dont think there is much other things but if you get busy lots then maybe cold water would be a good option

Go to http://www.liveaquaria.com ...

Type in the fish's name and it will tell you the temperature range they like.

On the box of the heater, it says what size tank it is for.

Java Fern and Java Moss are good for tropical tanks and are easy to take care of.

The liveaquaria website and Complete Encyclopedia of the Freshwater Aquarium book help me alot.
