It is messed up. Governments are humans, humans are trouble animals. However, with good systems, humans respond fairly well, with bad systems they respond very badly.
In the USA the system promotes corruption by the public officials, How? By allowing campaign contributions and lobbying. This can be remedied by establishing a public financing of campaigns law.
The war on drugs is also a source of corruption, just as the laws against alcohol sales were in the 1930s. By legalizing drugs, we would take the money out of the drug trade, police corruption, and additional corruption of public officials.
In summary, all governments are subject to corruption, but that corruption may be greatly reduced by removing money from politics and laws.

Because we let it get that way by not paying attention to what they've been doing for the last 30 years or so. Probably further back.

FDR loved Stalin, so maybe the Stalinist ideals started back then and have been growing for a long time.

It doesn't help much that the media has been socialist in nature since the 60's and they hide what they don't want us to see.

The latest tactics are being perpetrated by the "greens" who want to control the economy completely through politics, scaring people with this "global warming" nonsense and hoping to tax every aspect of our life "for the good of the planet."

It won't work since we know now that real science opposes the "man-made global warming" myth.

Everyone in government seems to be taking care of themselves. They treat voters like royalty until the election is over, then we become like a necessary evil.

Democracy will always shift toward Communism, and Communism will always shift toward democracy. It happens slowly but it always happens. Study any history book and you will find the same pattern over and over again.
