My car I think is worth $3500 blue book value.

I know they are right that it is the rack and pinion because the power steering is leaking and the steering shakes at about 60 mph.

Why did you have the car inspected? Was something acting funny?

If this was just an annual safety inspection and the car did not have any symptoms, don't cough up money for any suggested repairs without going to another shop for a second opinion.

Just like going to a doctor for a check-up without any aches or pains. If he says "We need to get rid of that appendix", Question him as to why. What would happen if we didn't? and then verify with another independent party.

Could be the shop just wants the money.

If it really needs a rack and pinion after a second opinion, you will have another estimate too. I'm guessing parts and labor for replacement will be up around a grand though. No harm in shopping the job around if it is really necessary.

yes this price sounds right for parts and labor. your doing the right thing by comparing the value of the car to how much it will cost to fix it, but have you been planing on buying something different soon? Is your car nice, what is your price range for a different car? Sometimes $1000 maybe alot of money but $1000 is cheaper than buying a different car. Also if not fixed your car will not be worth $3500 anymore if you don't get it fixed.

FYI: about what the guy said above, 95% of shops will not let you walk in with a part and ask to have it put on.

I don't know if the price is right, but I can tell you that in many places they will tell you that you need something done to your car in order to pass inspection. (It happened to me and I lost about the same amount of money, by not getting another check done.)

In my opinion, you should have someone else look at your car before you pay $1000 to have it fixed, just to make sure the assessment (that there is really a problem) is correct. You may be able to save yourself a lot of time, money, and aggravation.

depends on the car do yourself a favor call your local auto parts store and see what a rack will cost and call around and get estimates to get it installed. it will be much cheaper that way since you are not paying the mark up on the parts for the shop

the parts probably coast about 2 to 300 hundred dollars but they sure get you on labour. may be you can get a friend to do the job for a little less .good luck
