I am planning to buy a used car in the near future and I was wondering if car shops charge anything for a car to be inspected for defects or damages. I was just wondering if you could give me an estimate of what a car shop usually charges before having repairs done. Thanks a lot.

Depends on the shop and their labor rate but a good guesstimate would be an hour or two to do a complete inspection and remove tires and wheels to check brakes, do a road test, inspect filters, check fluid levels and for leaks, etc. Call around to various shops and see what they charge and what they'll do for the service.

paul is correct - translates to $90 to $140 for a decent inspection - depends on hourly rates and time spent - and the type of car (trucks and luxury cars may require a little more time to inspect)
