I think (this is strictly my opinion) that Gerald Ford's kids and wife made him somewhat cool.
He had four handsome sons and a pretty daughter who wore all the trendiest clothes and hung out with the coolest people. He had an outspoken wife who was a prescription drug abuser and a cancer survivor. She started the Betty Ford Center. The Fords personified culture in the mid-late 70"s.
They were refreshing after the too uptight Nixons.
