I don't think it will get much better, what are you going to do with the truck? Are you going to pull something,if not get a 6 or small 8cyl.I don't think that a diesel will save you much even with the better mileage as it will cost about $8000-10000 more to start with unless you are pulling something.I don't think a hybrid is the way to go either, more expensive to buy and how long will the batteries last?I have a Dodge Ram with the Hemi and I'm very happy with my mileage,I get 21 on the highway and 15 around town as long as I'm not jumping on the gas,but it is what I wanted and I use it to pull a camper so I needed the power.

There are many factors involved that affect fuel consumption and just because an engine has a smaller displacement doesn't necessarily mean that it will get better fuel economy. These vehicles should get very close to the same but you may have maintenance issues with the Dodge such as worn spark plugs, dirty air filter, low tire pressures or even possibly an oxygen sensor that has degraded to the point where it is affecting fuel economy but not bad enough to where it is seen as a problem by the computer. Have it checked for maintenance needs and replace the oxygen sensor if the car has more than 80k . Good luck.

Ford is in the process of developing a Hybrid F-150. It should be a pretty efficient car while also having typical F-150 features. One thing Ford has got right is they're Trucks and putting a hybrid engine in to them is a big step or them, but they are going to do it right when they do it, very reliable, look for it within the next 2 years.

Personally I'd wait and see what the 08 models look like. Chevy is planning to unveil a totally electric SUV for limited area testing, so what does that tell you? I was planning to upgrade my SUV but have lost interest, cant see spending that kind of money to buy obsolesence. Audi is bringing in a diesel SUV this year, frankly I wish there were more diesel vehicles to choose from. The Benz gets 37.5 cruising at 75mph...if you have an extra 50K.

at the moment you would be best off buying a diesel, but ford and honda are developing hydrogen and hybrid engines that dont throw crap out of the exhaust, the 2007 hummer h3 is supposed to get 20-30 mpg

i think the only one that could truly answer this question would be the manufacturer. I'm sure with technology of the newer trucks and cars they will get alot more out of it. you could get a diesel that will get alot more mpg then a gas motor.

Diesel's are available now and get much better mileage than gas and will probably improve in the near future also.
