Is there anything that the U.S can do in/with Mexico to stop ilegal immigration? We seem to focus our attention on the issue on our side of the border (attempting to stop ilegal immigration), but it seems like if we focused attention on the "root cause" it would be a better sollution. It may be that we are doing a lot and the news doesn't find it newsworthy. If so, what are we doing?

I think I phrased the question poorly. Or some folks are inserting their own agendas into MY question.

Key to the question is what can we do --->IN OR WITH<---- Mexico. The object of the question was is there anything the US Gov't can do IN MEXICO to alleviate root causes. Illegal immigration is a symptom (I think) of other issues. I'm not trying to comment on illegal immigration itself. It is what it is. Countless Mexicans risk life and limb to make a better life for themself and for goodness sake, they're our neighbors.

I have heard that international farming agreements have made Mexican farms uneconomical to operate and that they are the source of the immigrants. Those farms used to feed Mexico and employ her people but now international marketing provides Mexico with food and there is no need for those agricultural workers any more. I am not convinced of this theory but it sounds plausible. So if it is true, ending those international marketing agreements might be a place to start. Mexico also has a rather stratified economy like a lot of Latin America in which a very small elite controls most of the wealth. Its their country, how they run it is their business, but if somehow Mexico got something like a Cardenas government again (a very progressive Mexican President of the 1930's) who would force a more equitable distribution of the country's vast wealth (it is very richly endowed) that might help as well.

Haven't your heard, the congress proposed a new immigrant bill. This bill allows illegal immigrants to stay here in the United States if they work and don't commit any crimes. One thing is that they are not eligible for welfare and the government will monitor how many illegal immigrants that can have residency. I will find the link for you.

I think that we shouldn't do anything. It's the responsibility of the Mexican gov. to help its citizens not ours, but we all know that the Mexican gov. does nothing and suffers from corruption. oh, I got an idea we should keep those who have very good grades and are productive. Those who belong to gangs or committed crimes must be sent back to Mexico.

Mexico is responsible for their own misery. They make it difficult for any business to open there regardless whether it is American or another country. Mexico also has troops on their southern border but for some reason, that doesn't bother anyone.

i agree!

because you know if the us opens the border for mexicans, because a bunch of mexicans are marching then they will have to let AFRICANS, ASIANS, EUROPEANS from all countries in to be fair,

then the country will overflow and be like a huge new york...or worse NEW JERSEY
