although many answers will be sarcastic, and say 512mb they will actually be wrong
i have a 512mb vertabim usb pen drive and the capacity is actually 495mb(or round about)
this is the same when buying hard drives(internal and external),the reason for this shortfall is due to the way drives are formatted and also 48-bit Logical Block Addressing Support for ATA (IDE), Serial ATA or ATAPI hard drives
in other words a certain amount of a drive has to be left unallocated
so this is a excellent question mate and tthe answer is about 490mb
good luck mate!

A 512 Megabyte USB flash drive would hold just that, 512 MB of anything you put on it. I believe that's about half a Gigabyte.

Click start > run > compmgmt.msc and go to 'Disk Management', if the device is there then it has suffered from a bad read / write and will need to be formatted. XP may even offer it as a suggestion. Note that formatting will completely wipe out whatever is on that device, so many sure you're picking the correct one.
