I was just watching everybody hates Chris and there was an Indian at the end.. who cried a single tear.

I was Dave Chappelle and he referred to an Indian who also cried a single tear when Dave threw away a chewing gum wrapper.

What is the hsitory behind the Indian crying a single tear?

Not to be Redundant, But it WAS the Anti-Litter campaign of the 70s. He was seeing what we Did to "America the Beautiful". There were a few versions, for Litter, Water, and Air Pollution.
It was a VERY Powerful Image, in an age where Ads were Bright and Gleeful.

The Chief Joesph story, though True, in and of itself, is not for this Reference.

There was an old PSA commercial in the 80's or early 90's i believe on littering in America. Well the commercial showed a Native American on a reserve that was full of garbage and litter and what not and if I'm correct, a car drove by releasing litter. Then the camera zooms on the Native American, as one tear rolls down his face. And that scene has been spoofed ever since!

It was the commercial and highlights the fact that Native Americans care deeply about the Earth and the Environment, hence the Cree Prophesy;

When all the trees have been cut down,
when all the animals have been hunted,
when all the waters are polluted,
when all the air is unsafe to breathe,
only then will you discover you cannot eat money.

IT was chief Josef he had a treaty with the white man and they gave him a American flag as a promise to him that he would never be attacked and he believed them. one morning his camp and people were attacked by the same army and all his people were killed and he stood out side draped in the flag that he had trusted in and a single tear rolled down his cheek.
I know this is true as I have studied Indian history my whole life and I found this to be one of the saddest stories I read, because he was so trusting and the white man took advantage of him whole camp.I am surprised so many people do not know history and think this is a commercial well it is not.

There was a commercial in the '70's about littering and the effect on the planet, and it ended with an Indian looking at a bunch of litter--on a crowded highway, I think--and he had a single tear roll down his face. See it on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4ozVMxzNAA

I have seen it too parody many times. It is from a very popular overly run commercial from the 1970's so some of us might be too young to have seen the original. It is commercial designed to promote environmentalism. Interestingly enough the actor playing the Indian is actually Italian.

Don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that, as littering harms the natural world, and native americans rever the natural world, it would hurt them to deface it in this way! A single tear then would be appropriate!

Probably a better attitude than mine as littering just makes me cross!!!

This parody is based on an old commercial for anti litter in the USA. I guess they thought only Native Americans are saddened by the destruction of our ecology.
