In all honesty, this coversation will always be awkward. You just have to get him to sit down and talk to him about it. You can invite her and her family over to eat if you would like to see her character and make your son know that you are comfortable with it afterwards.

You did not say how old your son is, but at any age he still will probably be uncomfortable talking to you. You can casually bring it up in conversation. You can ask general information about her and say that you think she is nice or something like that. Don't make a big deal about it or he will clam up and most young relationships do not last long anyway.

As a previous person said, will always be awkard and from your question I will assume that you are a single parent as you did not mention a husband or a significant other.
I would use the wait and see approach. Most young men, myself included, when they think the time is right will introduce thier girl to you mom. It just may be to early in the relationship for him to say "Mom there's this girl I like."

when he talks about her, you could just offer up that you think she's really sweet and then just casually ask if he likes her. other than that, i'd leave him be. he'll sort out his feelings on his own, and no matter how you approach the situation, things will seem awkward. trust me, i know. my mom does that to me all the time and i hate it. :)

I have 2 sons, and I let them be to do their own romantic chases, etc. Maybe you should let him come to you when he's ready to talk about her. He'll respect you for letting him just live his life!

Why would it be awkward? You changed his diapers for years, you're his Mom. Just ask him.
I wish my parents would have exhibited a little interest in my life when I was younger...

Why do you want to? Leave it alone he is allowed to have a crush without his mom being in his business. If you pry into everything he is going to start hiding things. He needs some of his own privacy. Unless you are worried about his health or well being, let it be.
