I have no personal experience but I think if you are good, you are allowed to work to earn benefits. They don't have TVs in their cells, there is a community TV room. If you do something bad, you get put into solitary or whipped by the guards. I guess it depends upon the crime and the type of prison Federal or State. I don't know much but I watched documentaries on TV about prison life. Hopefully, you stay out of it..it is not a good place.

I did a tour of 2 prisons (one max sec.) in high school..
The inmates are set to do chores like laundry and cleaning and cooking, and have rotations during the day. They are also allowed to do physical activities like work out and play basketball. The better they are, the more .... easier/better.... their chores become. They make minimal amounts of money (like 20 cents) an hour that they can use to purchase cigarettes and soap and stationary etc. They have next to no privacy, being searched fully nude before and after visits. The guards stare in at them periodically throughout the whole day/night and do counts and checks so they can't just sit there and watch tv. I did not see any Televisions in their cells or in the main "hall' areas.

Well watching the programs on TV these days IS punishment so sitting in a cell watching TV would be considered serving Hard Time

Depends on the institution and the security. Most places, you DO work either in the prison or sometimes outside in road crews. they also have work-study programs for you to try and improve yourself. There are no TV's inside the cells...its not a Holiday Inn. Generally its one-two hours allowed in a common rec-room to watch.
But hey, look a the bright side... I hear it's pretty easy to hook up in the showers...

Your view of prison life is common---and glaringly wrong. Listen to what corrections officers and some former prison "residents" say here about life on the inside--then you decide which view is right.
American prisons and jails--on the local, state and Federal levels--all must, by Federal Law, adhere to strictly policed guidelines that call for clean, sanitary and "humane" prison living conditions exist for all incarcerated prison "residents".
Those sentenced to prison time "at hard labor" by a judge need not worry: Hard labor in prison is almost non-existant--thanks in great part to weak, unqualified prison administrators who are too scared of political back-lashes to make inmates do any deserving hard labor work.
Take a real look inside any American prison--and you'll be surprised how well and liveable they are. Some prisons allow inmates a large "TV room" to enjoy large screen digital high definition image color television viewing--complete with the FULL FREE movie channel packages! Some prisons allow inmates to enjoy life with central air conditioning / heating--espicially on the Federal prison levels, where you'll also find in their cells, they're allowed to possess microwave ovens and small fridges!!
Earning good time credits, quickly finding God, hustling $$$ from the "loved ones", and using the Jaycee and Toastmaster / "fund-raiser" scam to enjoy fast food dining are all focused goals of any prison inmate in America today.
It's shocking that all these wastes of tax $$$ and circumvents around the punitive elements of prison life are allowed to go on right under our noses--because we DON'T know what's going on inside our prisons......and maybe it's high time we find out what's REALLY going on!!!!

Most prisons try to rehabilitate an inmate. There are educational programs, exercise, sports, yes and even TV (though not in your cell) and yes, work programs.
These activities are strictly regimented (so no, you can't sit with the remote and flip stations).

Well they do not have tv's in their cells! There's one in a common room where they fight over which show to watch and they can only go there if they haven't done anything wrong. It's not a motel.

They put you in jail around here. And they don't have t.v.'s in cells. I've never been to jail before but my dad is a police officer and let me see one.
