It is a long story, you have to buy an outdoor access point or "wireless router" and an OMNI directional antenna inorder to expand the coverage area, and if it is two miles then you have to buy an amplifire, for your friends to pick up from your signal they have to get a Parabolic "Grid" antenna and a wireless LAN card or an Access point.
As for the restrictions the Access point or "wireless router have a network key, and a MAC address filter that you may use to prevent others from accessing the network.
All the above talk is for the 2.4GHz freq., there is also a 5.8GHz freq. which is expensive, more secured, MUCH better than 2.4GHz, and it have alot of other GOOD features.

By your own admission, you are no good with "gadgets"
You plan to provide an "ISP" type service
Several points, IF you could get Wireless to go to 2 miles (fat chance) you would be in breach of the terms of your own broadband account if you charge for it.
If you are not techie, managing the access would be like trying to persuade an octopus to wear a jumper.
Stopping others using it, same problems, U need to KNOW what you are doing.
Basically what you are looking to do is WAY beyond you, and the costs of equipment that COULD reach the distance required, makes it VERY unfeasable.

It won't work with a simple router. You will be going through this for your immediate neighbors. (100 feet maybe) Hardly worth the trouble with two or three. Then, if their computer is on the FAR side of the house, you will have to help them TROUBLESHOOT.
But in general, you would SECURE the wireless network, and share the password with paid-up neighbors.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

The equipment you will need to use will cost you a very big sum of money, plus it sounds you do not posses the technical knowledge to do this also and it will beyond anyone here to write down a set of instructions to do this as many problems pop up while doing these type of installs.
Lets just say it is not possible for you....

most home wifi solutions are only going to allow you to broadcast a couple of hundred feet. if you were in the same building you might be able to do it. selection of who gets in would be based on setting up a password ont he service. but if you are looking at the distances that you are, you will pobably not be able to do it.

you cant go 1 or 2 miles 1st of all. 2nd of all that is illegal. and 3rd it is an extreme security risk to you . you are risking getting kicked off your internet and risking people stealing your personal information.
