Yes. It was in the 80's before there was much knowledge about the disease. It was big news on the set of Dynasty because he had to kiss Linda Evans in one of their scenes and they weren't sure if the disease could be transmitted that way yet. How far (most of us) have come!

Years ago I heard the gay rumors about him. I dismissed them as impossible. When I heard he died of AIDS, I wasn't surprised because of what I had heard.
