Good answer from Dathinama! Further ifo - take non notice of the doom merchants about how difficult it is - B+@@ocks!!! If you follow the procedure it is so easy - as D said jack the car up ( or run it onto a kerb) so that the sump plug is at the "downward" side allow the engine to warm up first - switch off - place a large bowl or similar under the plug ( the sump covers the whole of the base of the engine) make sure before you start that you have the correct amount & grade of oil & the correct oil filter - where you buy them from will give you the info then undo the sump plug slowly - using a socket or a sump plug spanner depending on the type of plug.allow all the oil to drain then remove the filter - you can buy a special ratchet tool for this but I have found it is just as easy to punch a hole in with a large screwdriver to twist it loose. Clean the threads on the filter housing, smear with a little grease plus a little on the (supplied) gasket. Screw on the filter taking care not to crossthread & hand tighten. Replace the sump plug & pour in the fresh oil - don`t overfill - run the engine for a couple of mins then check & top up if needed - Get rid of the waste oil RESPONSIBLY!!!

The position of the sump isn't important. All you need to do is find the drain plug and remove it to drain the oil. I would suggest jacking the car up a bit to tilt it towards the drain plug so all the oil can drain out. Remove the oil filter and replace it with a new one. Remember to coat the rubber gasket with a little oil and then hand tighten the filter back on. Put the drain plug back in and tighten it. Fill the oil with the recommended amount of oil and then run the engine for a minute or two. Shut it off and recheck the dipstick to make sure the oil is at the right level.

If you don't know where it is, Don't try and fix it. Please take it to a shop and have them do the work. It's worth paying the 50 bucks to have them change the oil. Besides you most likely do not have anything to put the oil in to. You don't know where the oil filter is located. And you will probably use vise-grips to pull the drain plug. Please take it to a shop and have them do the work. They often will grease the chaise and check all your fluids while they are changing the oil. it's worth the money and the 20 minutes to have them change it.

If you dont know where it is (or the correct term for it, SUMP is a racing term used on specialty engines, aka DRY SUMP OIL TANK, at least in the USA) I dont recomend you try to change it yourself. The potential for SEVERE engine damage is very high. Take it to an oil change place or better yet a local dealership (they specialize in the particular make of your vehicle) and have them change it.

Get a Pela 6000 for your oil changes. My VW dealer changes oil exactly the same way but with an industrial type version.

good advice from arthur r, please be careful if using a screwdriver to twist filter off, depending on which vehicle and model oil filters are in many different styles and positions ie paper element or canister, if paper element will generally be positioned higher in the engine block with a plastic screw off top, canister will be half way down or lower on the engine block cloured white black or blue.

If you have to ask this sort of question really you should be looking at getting it done for you, and think about a basic car maintenance class

Peter G `s right, if you have to ask how something this basic`s done you should get someone who does know, to show you, then you`ll be able to do it yourself next time.
