on the elevation adustment, there is a red line painted on it, do I use the very edge of the line where the metal ends, or the other end, back of the red line they painted, or do I use the middle of the red line.

Unless the line is really wide, it will probably work if you put it in the mddle. The best way is to set your satellite reciever to it "dish pointing" setting, and adjust the antenna dish for maximum signal strength. If you are worried about messing it up. Take a fine point marker and put two marks on the moveable section before you start the adjustment. That way if you want to start over, you just move the dish back to where your two marks originally lined up. The reason you use two marks is to make it easier to get back to the exact starting position.

I haven't done that for a while but as I recall the instructions that came with the mount were clear on that subject.

There is always some fooling around required to get the max signal (and if outside of the proper pointing position the signal will be worthless). So just pick one and move on to the next step of adjusting for max signal. You will know very quickly whether you need to move it. That is easier than delaying the installation while you are worrying over it.
