When the water breaks (a gush without any help from you) or when the contractions begin. They will feel like a cramp or tightening in the abdomen that if you watch a clock or count to yourself will fall into a regular pattern and eventually become stronger. Most women, when it begins, "know" that it's time, but others simply stop and think, "Is this it?"
