Sorry, you can't write one on your own and just go defend it - you need to do that at a university. Your degree is not only based on your dissertation, but also on your coursework and your qualifying exam scores - all of which require going to a university.

So go apply to grad school if you want a degree. But if you already think you know the field, you don't need a PhD to publish original research - you just need to be able to back it up.

You can write it, but if you're not in a degree program, you can't use it to get a degree.
