Rookie classification is only meaningful for qualifying for the Rookie Of The Year Award. The BBWAA, which votes on the ROY, considers a player to be a rookie in the season in which he EXCEEDS a career total of one of:

a. 130 at-bats, or
b. 50.0 innings pitched, or
c. 45 days of active service on the 25-man roster (Opening Day through August 31).

Rolen got hit by a pitch and broke his wrist in what would have been his 131st career at-bat, except a HBP is not counted as an AB (it is a plate appearance), and so was still eligible for the ROY the next season, which he won unanimously.
