If you want to become a professional at it you need a real live teacher. Some books can get you started, but a qualified teacher will get you miles ahead a lot faster.

This is what happens:
1. get free online lessons or books = it'll never work well
2. get a qualified music teacher = it'll cost alot of $$$, but you'll be pretty good in 5 years if you have natural talent.

Reality check, you can't be a professional, because your skills won't match to a person who started at a young age, theirs are sharper and people can tell the difference.
I know this because I started playing piano when I was 13.
Now, i can play the piano really well, but not as great as someone who started at 5.

Have you ever seen the little gymnasts doing backflips at the Olympics? They started as children.

Like Olympians, professional musicians must start learning while they are young.

Amateur musicians, on the other hand, can start learning to play for personal enjoyment, at any age.

If you love the piano, good for you. Find a qualified piano teacher (perhaps at the local university's music department) and practice, practice, practice. However, please do not enter into it thinking that you'll come out the other side playing as well as a pro. It's possible, but highly unlikely (unless you're under the age of 12 right now).

I'm a pianist.. and you really don't wanna know how much each private lesson is. My mom is a profession pianist... and it's about 75 dollars for 45 minutes for a single piano lesson

You want to do it for a living even though you don't know anything about it? That's wierd. Even if you did plan to do it as a career, you'd have to devote a little bit of money and time, by getting lessons in person.
