I think we all find our way of dealing with the life we live. "Happy" people may even include those who rave about the slightest problems and seem to be having a crisis and meltdown every other day, and appear not to fit most people's definition of happy.
If I had tons of friends and money and was "all set" I would be lost, the feeling would be so unfamiliar to me.

People harping on about the persuit of happiness are overated. Happiness is transient. Funny though as others have said it means different things to different people. In my twenties I wasn't happy every minute/hour/day of my life but I could say it was the happiest decade of my life. I'm happy mostly. But wouldn't be able to stand being happy all the time. I like being grumpy, angry and sad. It's what makes me.

Hello,
(ANS) Happiness shouldn't be confused with contentment they are NOT the same thing. I think to experience true happiness is quite rare in our culture. Why? because we are so obsessed with materialism or material goods or money and these things have a very limited capacity to make us truly happy.
**I think happiness is a fleeting or rare condition or experience which only arises when the circumstances allow for it.
**If someone is quite content then they are lucky, contentment is an acceptance that what you have is enough.
**The advertising industry is designed to make us feel unhappy or discontent, why? because happy or contented people DON'T spend lots of money. Why? because they have no need too!! they have enough.

Happiness is a transitory state. Happiness is difficult to sustain or maintain over time. Consider the longest consecutive period of time that you were happy in the past. You will find that the experience is rather short lived and people spend considerable energy trying to capture these brief moments in time.

no one can be happy all the time. I usually get depressed a few times each day. the people that act like they are happy and are so energetic they need ritalin, arent people I usually relate to. In fact, they make me go crazy

It can be. And being in a state of any emotion for a long period of time only numbs you to it.
Contentment is a good place to be. It's a low level emotion that can be sustained for a long while.

Happiness is something quite compicated, as you have to satisfy a lot of wants and needs. Only if you are able to satify all your basic needs like security, tirst, and health.. you are able to reach something called trancendence, where you can become more than you actually are.

I think it's very true that people prefer comfort over great happiness. Sometimes the grumping is just because family will tolerate it and nobody else will.
