There are two main types of marine plants: algae (including seaweed) and seagrasses.
The seaweeds are green, brown, or red. Most people know two major groups of seaweeds: kelps (a brown alga), and a type of red alga Carrageen Moss (Chondrus crispus) and Dulse (also a red alga, Palmaria palmata).
A seagrass is a flowering plant, complete with leaves, a rhizome (or stem) and a root system. You can find a complete species list at http://www.botany.hawaii.edu/seagrass/species.htm
