Our high school is having a spirit week next week. Our school is mostly white, with some African Americans and Asians. One of the days is "ghetto day" in which kids are supposed to dress in baggy clothes. Is this offensive to you/would you be offended to see white kids dressing "ghetto"? Or would it just be funny.

I think it would be really funny. When I see black kids that i know or others that i don't dress all "ghetto", i laugh at it becuase it's funny. (especially the way they walk). I wouldn't really find it offensive because i'm not ghetto. Only those who are ghetto might find it wrong, i guess. (i would probably participate for fun) But think about this, would you like a day where everyone included the asians and blacks to dress "white"? Think about that!

In my opinion, this is totally unacceptable!!!! What is the meaning of Ghetto? Baggy pants? Do-rags? Drive-by shootings? This is called stereo typing. I have 4 boys, and don't live in the ghetto. They like to wear their pants baggy, shoe laces untied, etc. They are not "ghetto". Ghetto is a state of mind. Just because you live in the ghetto, does'nt mean that you have to act ghetto. (which in my opinion is talking foul languge, not carrying yourself well, and not respectful of other people) I know more "affluent" yuppies that are more ghetto than those who actulaly live in the projects. I would love to know the location, name and phone number of your school and report this to someone. If I were you, I dress up like your principal and tell him that this is your "ghetto" outfit!!!!! I'm outraged!!! Spirit week is when you dress in your pajama's, wear your clothes inside-out, paint your faces of your school colors.

I am not african american, but this issue came up at a schoo I taught in.. I think it was a racist idea veiled thinly as a "spirit activity." Insulting others and mocking do not build spirit. Fortunatley they did go forward with it...

Being black, I would be slightly offended. It seems as if a stereotype is being reinforced.
