i had the same exact prroblem so i put it flat and the tray works fine now if that dont work then u may have to get it repaired or get ps3 lol its pretty good

I have the same problem (but it happens both ways)... My belief is that the motor that drives the 360 is just too weak for that tray. I also think the tray has a tencancy to stick. I fixed the problem for a while by cleaning my tray and putting the very smallest amount of teflon lubricant on the back of the tray face where it seats to the xbox 360.

My Xbox 360 keeps playing up too what a coinkydink
try placing a 6 inch nail at the centre of the X and hammering it securely into place. If that doesn't work throw it out the window a couple'o times and get a nintendo wii on ebay.

yeah, keep it horizontal, if you need it vertical for space needs, slightly tilt it back by putting something like a book of matches under the front, hopefully that should help, good luck.
