It by Stephen King is really scary, unlike the movie. Stephen King also wrote a short story called The Apt Pupil. It's terrifying to see the character development of both the old man and the young boy.
Never see a Stephen King movie! You'll either walk out wondering what all the fuss is about him or you'll walk out pissed that they weren't at all true to the story. No way can the screen do the detail in his stories justice.

Everybody has different tastes - so what I think is horror you might find pretty lame.
I personally like Dean Koontz. James Herbert and Stephen King
I have read all of Dean Koontz so go for anything you fancy.

"The Black Angel" by John Connolly. Definitely a disturbing read. It kept me sitting straight up and on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading it.

"The Wasp Factory" by Iain Banks is an unnerving look into the genesis of a young murderer. It scared the hell out of me.
