I have two red rainbow sharks. The one appears very skinny. Both swim all levels of the tank, but enjoy hidding by the heater. They hide long wise with this head up. Is this normal? They are in a new tank which has been up and running for three weeks. They are small so I'm guessing they are young.

It's too late... he died today. He got really skinny and lost color. We placed him in a new tank, but he wouldn't eat. There are 3 small angel fish, 1 (agressive) female molly, 1 black male molly, 2 Bleeding hearts, 1 African Dawf Frog, another red rainbow shark, and 2 rainbow fish (I think). We have a 36 gallon tank with plants and hiding space.

One is normal while the other is skinny huh? That's not good news for the skinny guy. First, these fish are quite territorial when it comes to other Rainbow Sharks, so odds are good the smaller one is getting picked on a bit and having a hard time getting enough food. Also, a tank that has been running for 3 weeks has not yet completed the cycle and is not what would be considered a mature tank. Rainbow Sharks really do best in a mature tank, so you aren't seeing either one of them at their best yet.

I would suggest you remove and return the smaller of the two and keep only one in the tank.

The way they are hiding is normal enough. You might give the one you will have left a long, low place to hide so he can hide laying normally in the tank too.

Hope that helps and best of luck!
