It really depends on the state you live in and the severity of your seizures.

For instance, I experienced seizures about once a year throughout my teens and early twenties. I had no problem getting a license.

My cousin had severe epilepsy, and did receive a license with driving restrictions on it. If she didn't go for a select period seizure-free, they would take her license away until she had.

On a related note, my cousin died at age 28 and injured her two young children when she had a massive seizure behind the wheel of her car.

Please be honest with yourself, your physician, and your licensing agency. You don't want to endanger yourself or others on the road.

NO ... NO ... NO! My daughter was diagnosed with a mild case of Epilepsy. She had her drivers license for 35 days, but when her doc notified the state, New Jersey (as he's legally obligated to do), the state suspended her license.
While she's nearly fully controlled with medication, she still seizes periodically. It's uniform law in the U.S. that a person with a seizure disorder must be seizure-free for one calender year before resuming driving. If you go 11 months and 29 days and seize, you start counting all over again!
Don't fool around ... it could kill you or someone else!

Probably not. I work with someone who has seizures and she isn't allowed to drive. She only has a seizure about once a month. This is not only dangerous for the person who has seizures, it's dangerous for those on the road too.

That length of time that you have to be seizure free before you can obtain your drivers license depends on the guidelines in your particular state. What I would suggest is to contact the DMV in your area and they can give you a definite answer.

I am an epileptic.Your neurologist will tell you when you can drive again. Are you sure you have seizures? You may be having episodes of simple syncope. See a real doctor. A real doctor would explain your condition, and the restrictions in your state. Either way, DO NOT DRIVE.

I am an epileptic and haven't driven since '94. As much as I would love to drive, I wouldn't to take the chance of killing someeon. I am always hearing about epileptics pulling over when they feel that a seizure is impending. What about when you can't pull over in time?

Possibly. But unless they are mild ennough that you KNOW you can maintain control of a care, it would be as criminally irresponsible for you to drive as it would be for me (I am blind).

If you need an ID, your state will issue you an ID card --usually the same people who handle driver's licenses do this as well.

My understanding is that if your seizures are not totally under control through medication, you cannot drive.

Probably not, unless you can get medication that controls it well enough. You'd need to talk to your doctor and your local driver's license agency.
