Liberal studies may also be considered "liberal arts." It consists of studying various subjects to acquire a broad base of knowledge in many areas rather than in one particular area. It is thought to make one a more well-rounded person and generally better critical thinker.
Most universities in the U.S. may be considered "liberal arts" schools because, in addition to studying one's particular major, a student is required to take what are sometimes called "breadth" courses: courses in fields not related to one's specialization (e.g., a certain amount of math, English, social studies, ethnic/race studies). In addition to knowledge in their specialized areas, liberal studies give a student knowledge in several additional subject areas. Universities differ from technical colleges in this way; technical colleges require the student to study _only_ his/her specialization (not social studies, ethnic studies, etc.).
The College Board (http://www.collegeboard.com/highered/res/asc/got/got_g_o.html) defines liberal arts as "The study of the humanities (literature, the arts, and philosophy), history, foreign languages, social sciences, mathematics, and natural sciences. Study of the liberal arts and humanities prepares students to develop general knowledge and reasoning ability rather than specific skills."
If you're thinking of majoring in liberal studies, I say ... go for it. You'll be exposed to many new ideas and develop an interdisciplinary perspective (ability to see how various disciplines - math, science, philosophy, communications - intersect).

Liberal Studies is the art and science of screwing over your fellow man.
A well-seasoned liberal can turn an innocent man into a guilty man
and turn the most beautiful things in life into ugly things.
Trust me, if you are a happy, healthy & intelligent person,
"liberal studies" is the Last Thing you want in your life
