Learn to use your critical sense, do not believe everything you read -- especially religious holy books, which are 99% (at least) just plain false.
Get yourself a calculator, and whenever you see something quoted, try to work out if the numbers make sense.

SMART is a curious term. Many people are book smart but common sense idiots (they never seem to see the consequences of what they do). Books can teach you to know a lot of facts. Experience teaches you to know what to avoid and what to seek as good experiences. However, one way you can be smart is to use both books and experience to your advantage. Even someone who is only "average" in the IQ department can learn how to look something up - that's what knowing by experience can teach you when you use the Library. Don't know how to use the Library? Just ask the help desk where to find the books you want to check out. As for using the Internet to find information - it is an excellent source but not everything is accurate - again, experience here is invaluable. Develop a better memory by learning some memory tricks to help you recall the things you've seen and read. Remember: the older you live to be the more you'll know but unless you put some common sense with it (the ability to decide between good, bad and eventual consequence) all the knowledge in the world won't be worth much.

There are numerous techniques that one can utilize to improve ones study habits utimately improving ones grades. I think it unfortunate that many of our formal educational institutions do not teach us how to study. We, as students, are ask to just perform at some level on our homework and tests. Many times not knowing how to go about doing just that. Please note that an A student is not necessarily smarter than a B student. Unfortunately, society has enabled this myth. Since most of us live in a society that requires a formal education, then it behoves us to learn how to study. Sometimes answers are not as important as to the who, what, where, why, and how.
Be curious. Don't wait for a question to be asked. Look to ask question(s) of anything of everything. It is by asking questions that the process of learning begins. To live a fulfilling life, one never stops asking questions. By doing this, one opens their mind to infinite possibilities. This will lead to answers and hopefully to more questions. I hope your goal is not just to be smarter (which is subjective and relative to ones surroundings), but that your goal is to learn for the sake of learning also known as self-edification.
Enjoy your life of questions and answers...and never stop!
