Do this task:
Right click "My Computer">properties>Advanced tab>Click the performance settings button>advanced tab>click the vitual memory change button...
This will open the "Virtual memory" window where you can set the size for your VM or have Windows manage it.
I suggest you select "System managed size" (Don't forget to click the "Set" button before you exit).
Your Pc restarts automatically.
Wait a while your PC gets normal. If you want, you can let it like that for a long time, if not, you can type your values as 384 for minimum size and 768 for maximum size. Then after, restart.
The values are only for 256 mb of ram.

Good Luck.

You don't have near enough Ram. Windows XP needs at least 512 megs, and a gig is better. That is why your system keeps Swap filling on you. IE, it is using part of the hard drive as Memory. don't worry about enlarging the virtual memory, just install more system mem. You'll be amazed that the jump in performance.

This is the best explanation and of how to set it ... Also if you change it and its still running slow your better off picking up another 256mb of RAM for your system it will make a big difference ... a 2 Ghz System is a very good computer still !!

I agree with Ron M - you need 512mb ram or more, but for now i would run ccleaner.

change it to 1000 or over
and when all becomes fine then change it to original value
or just wait till windows increases it automatically
