You are confusing WIRELESS ETHERNET (also known as "Wi-Fi" or 802.11a/b/g) where you access the ethernet through your home wireless router, offices, hotels, airports, Starbucks cafe...etc. with CELLULAR BROADBAND (also known as MOBILE BROADBAND) offered by cell phone companies like Sprint and Verizon Wireless.

Newer generation laptops will allow you to have the option to add this special receiver into your laptop itself at the time of purchase - a $180 option. From my experience, people seldom choose this option, because not only do you need to pay for this hefty price, you also need to subscribe to the $60/mth service. And note that if you choose this option, you cannot change providers, because these receivers are usually designed for only 1 provider.

Wi-Fi ethernet however is now a common standard feature in many laptops.

So your laptop isn't ready for any kind of mobile broadband plans unless you buy an external PC card from the cellular company (their prices are coming down).
