Many years ago, when television first became so popular, there were some groups who thought it would "rot" the minds of young people and that it was becoming a bad thing. So TV was nicknamed the "idiot box" for a while.

Girlnamedmaria is exactly right about this as many years ago when it first became popular, many thought it would become such an obsession that it would melt the minds of young people as it would keep them from doing many other useful things. Growing up in the 60's as a kid we were outside most of the time and TV at night was kind of a treat and not something we stayed glued to all the time.

Because it takes away any need for you to use your own brain. Thus, yuou stop thinking on your own, & start emulating the behavior that you've seen performed on the television. This is why it's so dangerous for us to use the tv as a babysitter for our children. They will play out the violence that they learn from tv. So, don't be suprized when this behavior occurs in your children.

Because most of the shows are idiotic, now more than ever. Think about it - game shows, reality TV, contests like Top Model, American Idol, Dancing with the Stars??? All dreck, in my opinion...

Who knows why the phrase was coined? Most likely someone perceived pretty quickly how addictive and time-wasting it could be and felt like an idiot.
