Radios were also called sets,and the same term was use for televisions when they were introduced in 1936, and the name has stuck since.I think it was because in those days they all used valves, the glass ones,long before transistors and semi conductors were invented.A radio had a set of valves to operate it as did a television.More modern electronic equipment has never used valves and so the word set has not been applied to them.

I think it comes from the time of Radio sets when TV was in it's infancy. I think it releates to the sets of valves involved but not sure

It goes back to the old days when radios and tellies worked on valves , so you had to have the right set of valves for it to work !!
