i have a very basic push mower, 4hp Briggs and Stratton. Probably 8 years old. I tried new plug and new idle/governor springs. once started, the engine speed just surges up and down over and over. ran great for years before this. happened out of nowhere. it wont really cut grass either, the load on the engine just kills it. thank you

The problem is the caburator. It has a diaphram carb and it needs a rebuild kit installed. You can get the kit from any mower repair shop and either have them do the work or do it yourself. The carb will have to be removed and taken apart and cleaned. Make sure the gas tank is clean also. Reassemble per the instruction with the kit. It will run like new.

It has to be the governor. Does the governor lever move during the surging? If so, try limiting that movement. It won't be a great mower, but you can at least mow your yard. Also, check your air filter and your fuel supply. When the engine asks for more power it may be starved of one or the other.

Most of the time that is caused by a pin hole in your diaphram. remove the carburetor and inspect that diaphram Hold it up to the light and see if it has a hole in it,. Most of the time the holes is near the metal lever in the diaphram. replace it and go cut grass.
