At least the Japanese did try to stop the war after Prime Minister Tojo was kicked out at the end of 1944. The Japanese tried to contact Russia and Sweden with peace proporsals in 1945. Yet LeMay firebombed Japan and Truman, trying both to finish the war after the defeat of Nazi Germany and impress Stalin, ordered the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Yet I think many, not all, Japanese at least showed remorse for the war. I can forgive them completely and show total sympathy. Not so the Germans: they refused to admit their mistakes supporting Hitler and fought until the bitter end with the Russian tanks pounding Berlin. And Dresden firebombed. It will take Germans a generation to admit some mistakes. What do you think?
P.D.: I am aware of Nanking rape of 1937.

I have been to Germany, and spent some time with different age groups17-mid 50's. Over dinner one night I asked them about just this. They all felt very bad about it, and they hated naizism in any form, in fact many are rabid about reporting any questionable activity. Granted they were all southern Germans. Throughout history the Japanese have seen themselves as a superior race, look into their treatment of captured americans. So few got out as they were executed or used as under fed forced labor. I have always felt that the Japanese were not and are not "sorry" for what they did, they are ashamed they got beaten by lesser beings.

I think you are incorrect about the Japanese. They were fighting to the last soldier until Truman made the decision to drop the atomic bomb. Then they admitted defeat and surrendered. Truman's action forced an end to the war in the Pacific theater and most likely saved some million or so lives in the process.

The Japanese wanted to surrender with pre Pear Harbor conditions. The Atomic Bomb was used to force the Japanese to Unconditional Surrender. This was our conditions. The Japanese do not like war however they do not admit to their mistakes from the 1920's through World War II.
