sports journalism not sports management

Keep in mind that Delaware is a very small state with a very limited number of colleges. As far as I can tell, the University of Delaware is the only university with a journalism program at all in the state, and that is only as a concentration within the English department. You might want to look further afield if you are really serious about this as a career goal.

I appreciate your career goal, but what you want is a general journalism program. Few people get to start their careers doing only sports; odds are that your first job will include reporting on school board meetings or writing obits or rushing out to broadcast from house fires and traffic mishaps. The only people who get to jump right in to exclusive sports journalism are former star pro athletes who already have name recognition.

The best journalism programs are the ones with accreditation from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). Look up the journalism or broadcasting programs of any college you're considering to see if they meet those high standards; if they are accredited then they'll make it a point to publicize it. Note that this is different from the college-wide accreditation that comes from one of the national accrediting boards.

While you're in college, you can work your way into the sports pages of the student paper and do some reporting on the campus radio station--and try to get involved in the actual sports teams, if not as a player then as a manager or assistant.
