their are a few ways im assuming that this is your 1 and only master hard drive and your running xp also you should still have your xp cd/dvd.
go to yourBIOS (turn on your computer and hit esc or f1 or f5 or f8 its diff on diff pc's) find boot sequence or boot order or boot priority or the like, and set as first boot device your CDROM then put your windows xp CD in and reboot your computer and hit any key when asked you will go to the installation screen from there you can delete the partition that has WINDOWS XP and reformat it and reinstall windows you should have another
You'll have to delete the existing partion before you can reformat. Anything else will not work. You are given this option when you boot from the CD. You have to select the drive that you want to delete by high lighting it and pressing L. You will be asked to confirm this. Follow the rest of the instructions provided to you...
hope this helps sry i couldnt get into great step by step detail if you still have trouble just ask i will try and help

If this is an NTFS drive, IE, XP, then put your XP disk into the CD drive and boot your system. When you get to the page that asks if you want to install XP now, go down a line or two and follow the instruction for removing the partition and then follow the instructions on creating the partition again. Now you have a empty partition and windows will want to formatt it. Click yes. When you get fairly close to having the drive formatted, stay close, because when the formatting is complete, windows will start to load, but instead of letting it doso, turn off the computer. Your drive is now formatted and ready for use.

Hmmm, why do you want to do a format?
If you want to format and reinstall your operating system, then you need to put your OS cd in and restart your computer, boot from the cd and follow the instructions.
Your question is too vague, what OS are you using?
If you just want to format a non-system drive then right click on the partition and select Format. Just remember you'll lose all data on it so do a backup first.
PS: as everyone says, if you are not computer-savvy then ask someone to do it and watch and learn, that's the best way.
Good Luck...

Why would you possibly want to do that??? Reformatting and reinstalling the OS is a long and time-consuming process that always winds up with me losing files I didn't remember and settings. What is the real problem that makes you think this is the best answer?

What is your real problem trying to format your hard drive. If u are getting a error messages like virus, spyware ect try to install some antivirus & anti spyware softwares that will help u. If not reformating your computer will take a long time. Try asking a friend who knows computer very well.

Are you sure you want to reformat... If you are not computer savvy you will be in for some headaches... YOu will wipe out all of your applications, your saved files, delete all of your drivers and you will have to replace and reinstall all of them to get your machine to work again.

Well, if you're not very computer savvy, I would have someone else do it...
But if you must, then restart your PC in DOS, and type in the following commands.
cd C:\
format C:\
and answer yes.

Put in the windows disk and boot to CD. It will ,in the process of reloading your OS, format the hard drive. By saying format most ppl are refering to reloading the OS

Make sure you have all the proper discs to reload everything first....Operating software and so on.
Open your computer in DOS mode and then type in C://format
When you hit enter it will ask you if you are sure and if you tell it yes then its going to completely wipe your hard drive.

first of all put your winxp into your cd rom and boot your pc... pls make sure you got your restore cd or driver for all hardware you use like display, sound, network adapter etc.
if you dont have the driver make sure you find this software driver genius to collect all your software and compact it. its easy after that you can format your hdd safely.
but if you already got all the driver just boot with your xp cd then follow the instruction. you can do it!
