but the second computer was not responding to internet connection. For the first computer i tried the TCP/IP connection with the IP as 192:168:0.1,Subnet mask was 255.255.255.0 and default gateway as 192.168.0.2 and for the second computer the ip was the same as the default gateway of the first PC while the default gateway was the IP of the first PC... Is there anything more to be configured to make the second computer to connect to the internet? My ADSL modem is connected to the first computer and can it be done with "obtain an ip address automatically"? I dont have a router because i know both computers can be connected without a router any more suggestions or what can i do about the second computer to connect to the internet....Thats a lot

Yes, use a router... it is much easier and safer. It is difficult to configure one computer as the gateway to share an internet Connection.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Well, lets see...
Both PC's have to have a unique IP, and be in the same subnet as the DSL modems LAN port. (you stated the second ip is the same as the gateway for the first - wrong, wrong, wrong!!) So, if the DHCP server in the modem hands out 192.168.0.X numbers, Staticaly set one PC to 192.168.0.5 and the second to, say,192.168.0.10. Both subnet masks are right, (255.255.255.0) and both must have a gateway of 192.168.0.2 (the modems LAN IP).
Use straight-thru cables, not crossovers. This all assumes you at least have a Hub, since you don't have a router.
You'll also need to know the DNS server IP's - you can get them by connecting one PC noramally to the modem, and letting the PC obtain it's numbers automatically. Then run IPCONFIG /ALL in a dos box to view the IP info. The primary and secondary DNS numbers will be statically set, too, when you enter in the IP info above. (Both machines will use the same DNS numbers)
If Machine #1 has *both* an internal DSL card *and* an ethernet card, then you need to turn on Internet Connction Sharing (see windows help) on Machine #1 and connect the two PC's with a crossover. You also have the option to make a disk that will set up TCP/IP on the second machine.
-best luck

First you need to reset the ips to automatic, the ip addresses you setup are going to conflict with the connection to the internet....if you leave it automatic then all you need to do is set the first pc (the one actually connected to the internet) to allow for connection sharing....the second pc needs to have file and printer sharing turned on.....once the two pc's "see" each other in the network properties area, you should be able to access back and forth the shared files and folders.....and if you set the internet connection sharing up correctly the second pc should be able to access the internet. Another way to go is to turn on desktop sharing....and then set your firewall to only allow the access from the second pc....this would allow the second pc to not only use the connection of the first but, also give it control of the first pc.....of course that way complicated and it would be easier to simply install an ethernet bridge device and wireless access point. It does require purchasing 2 pieces of hardware, but since with aa bridge and access point you can use the existing internal hardware and hook up the bridge's on both pc's and get connected.
For more info on bridges you can check out http://help.cnet.com/networking/9602-12576_39-0.html?messageID=2509720&tag=tip-2509720&kw=networking
It is information primarily for wireless but the settings are basically the same for hard wired.
Also you can find more info at http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?event=viewProduct&localeCode=EN_USA&cid=5&pid=1474

You may just want to get a router. Even if it's wireless, it should have ports to add different things that require Internet access via Cat 5 Ethernet cables.
Even if you don't have wireless now, and you end up getting it later on in time, you may be able to use the wireless router.

If the computers can see each other then I think you still need to set up internet connection sharing, which I quite easy IIRC.

befor start you must had two NEC cards one for connecting between external ADSL modem and your first computer using CAT.5 One-to-One cable and one NEC card to connecting two computers using CAT.5 X-over (cross over) cable.
If you have Internal Modem that not problem then you need one NEC card.
NEC : Network card.
Many configure
1. On First And Second computer go to "run" from start menu and type this " rundll32.exe hnetwiz.dll,HomeNetWizardRunDll " or go to "Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Communications\" And click on "Network Setup Wizard" or you can find "Network Setup Wizard" on Control Panel
2. after you opened "Network Setup Wizard" Connect to the internet , turn on second computer click "Next" and after that click "Next" again and wait....
3. You will see three Choices
A.1) on first computer choose first one "This Computer connects directly to the Internet,....etc".
A.2)Click "Next" And choose your connection that you want to use it to connect to the internet .
A.3) Click "Next" and make check on connection that you using it to connect two computers and UNCHECK the connection that connected to ADSL Modem.
B) on second computer choose second one "This Computer connects to the Internet throught a residenrial....etc".
4) Click "Next" and Type Computer description AND name for each computer must be different on each.
5) Click "Next" And type Workgruop name Must be the same on 1'st and 2'nd computer.

NO NOT READY YET...........?!!
You must proxy server on first computer
download this free program
from this SitePage: http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm
or directly link: http://www.analogx.com/files/proxyi.exe
this is small JUST (269 KB)
run setup and run program on tow computers..
if you want second computer connect to the internet or close it (nearly clock on right-bottom of desktop) if you want to stop using internet on second computer.
by default "Proxy" have configurations its make (On) at 6 services make "SMTP" and "POP3" (Off) because it will be make ports open for hackers.
not yet......
connection of first computer....
Just on connection that using to connecting tow computers go to TCP/IP and set IP "192.168.0.1" with its default Subnet mask "255.255.255.0" and leave the other empty.
BUT on connection that using for modem connecting, leave IP "obtain an ip address automatically"...
On second computer:
Set IP to "192.168.0.2" with Subnet mask "255.255.255.0" with default gatway "192.168.0.1" .
Go to second computer Internet Options then to "Connections" tab then click on "LAN Settings" at "Proxy server" area check at "Use a proxy server for your LAN,....etc"
and type "192.168.0.1" for Address and "6588" for Port field....
Now Click OK after you make check on "Automaticly detect settings" is Checked and "Use automaticly configuration script" is UNCHECK.....
