Ok, well the drive is Matshita dvd-ram uj831s and I have been doing reading about it and it seems to be a pretty crappy drive. If I buy another drive for my laptop how do I go about finding a better one that will fit in my laptop?

Before you spend money, you should try cleaning the optical lens (I have had problems like this before, and they were due to a dirty lens).

1)Eject your empty tray and locate the optical lens.
2)Use compressed air to blow off dust, OR use a Q-tip that has been slightly dipped in Rubbing Alcohol.
3)Use a gentle motion, the optical lens will move a little since it's suspended by a mechanized fixture, so don't put too much pressure when you swab it.

Try burning a CD and see if it works...Otherwise you may have to replace it, if you go with internal, it may be expensive to replace.

As far as the burner, I'm guess it's toast. Try cleaning it with a q-tip and alcohol. If that doesn't work, the best place I have found to buy computer gear is www.newegg.com .

This is the external cd/dvd writer I own and it's great.

You would probably be better off replacing the old internal burner. Internals are cheaper and faster than externals. It's very easy to replace.
